Elinor Donahue star of ‘Father Knows Best’ and her six-decade screen career

Elinor Donahue: From “Father Knows Best” to a Lifetime of Accomplishments

Elinor Donahue, celebrated for her pivotal role in the iconic American TV sitcom “Father Knows Best,” has enjoyed a remarkable career that extended far beyond the show’s conclusion.

At 86 years old, this Washington-born actress continues to leave her mark on the entertainment industry, recently making a guest appearance in the enduring soap opera “The Young and the Restless.”

In “Father Knows Best,” Elinor portrayed the character of Betty ‘Princess’ Anderson, the elder daughter in a middle-class family living an idyllic all-American life in the Midwest. The show initially aired on the radio in 1949 and continued until 1954. It made the leap to television, retaining only actor Robert Young from the radio cast as he portrayed the father, Jim Anderson.

During her six-year tenure on this beloved show, which ranked among the top ten most-watched American TV series at its peak, Elinor also made appearances in “Crossroads” and the “George Burns and Gracie Allen Show.” Her schedule was incredibly demanding, and she once revealed that she rarely had time to watch the show herself.

“By the time we’d get home at night and have our dinner, we’d be getting ready to learn our lines, go to sleep to get up and do it again. So, I never saw the show,” she confessed in an interview with Closer.

Born in Tacoma in 1937, Elinor became the primary breadwinner of her household during her teenage years when her acting career began to take off. She appeared in movies like “Love is Better than Ever,” starring alongside Elizabeth Taylor, and “Girls Town.”

After “Father Knows Best” concluded, Elinor continued to grace our screens, making notable appearances in “The Andy Griffith Show,” “Dr. Kildare,” “Star Trek,” and “Mork & Mindy.”

Throughout her illustrious career, this 86-year-old screen legend has made appearances in over 70 TV shows and has worked in movies such as “Winter Wonderland” and “Pretty Woman.”

Elinor married her first husband at the age of 19, driven by a desire to transition into adulthood. She candidly admitted, “I had just turned 19 and I was like a 13-year-old 19. I’d never had a chance to grow into a real person, so I was not mature at all.” To expedite her journey to adulthood, she agreed to marry the next person who proposed, which turned out to be Richard Smith, a sound man on “Father Knows Best.” Their union resulted in the birth of her first son, Brian, but the couple divorced six years later in 1961.

In 1962, Elinor wed prolific TV producer Harry Ackerman and had three sons with him. Despite their 20-year age difference, they enjoyed a happy marriage for nearly 30 years until Harry’s passing in 1991.

The following year, she entered her third and current marriage with contractor Lou Genevrino. Elinor retired from our screens a decade ago, capping off a remarkable and diverse career in the entertainment industry.

Elinor Donahue’s journey from “Father Knows Best” to her multifaceted life is a testament to her talent and versatility, demonstrating that sometimes the most unexpected paths lead to the most extraordinary destinations.
