Hey, it’s Asia Sky for Hip Hop DX, and you’re going to want to check this out: Kanye West is back in the headlines for his latest album, Vultures Vol. 1, where he name-drops some of the biggest names in entertainment, including Diddy, R Kelly, Taylor Swift, and more. This latest project is sparking a lot of conversation, and here’s why.
Album Release Party and First Impressions
On Thursday night, February 8th, Kanye hosted a private listening party at the United Center in Chicago to debut Vultures Vol. 1,
the first in a series of three collaborative projects with Ty Dolla $ign. The packed event featured over a dozen new songs, including the track “Carnival” with guest appearances from Playboi Carti and Rich the Kid. As expected from Kanye, the music wasn’t the only thing that got people talking—his lyrics did too.
The Controversial Name-Drops
In true Kanye fashion, Vultures Vol. 1 doesn’t shy away from controversy. On the album, Ye mentions several public figures who have made headlines for all the wrong reasons, including R Kelly, Bill Cosby, and Diddy. R Kelly, of course, is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence for sex trafficking and child pornography, while Diddy has recently faced multiple accusations of sexual assault. Bill Cosby, who was convicted of rape but had his sentence overturned in 2021, also gets a mention in one of the songs.
The Taylor Swift Saga Continues
And who could forget Taylor Swift? Kanye references their infamous 2009 MTV VMAs incident, where he interrupted Taylor’s acceptance speech, sparking a years-long feud that has seen many twists and turns. It seems that even after all these years, Kanye isn’t done addressing their complicated relationship, adding another layer to the ongoing narrative.
Addressing Anti-Semitism
In addition to the name-drops, Kanye also touches on the anti-Semitism controversy that has surrounded him in recent years. On Vultures Vol. 1, he takes on the topic with the same defiance that he showcased in previous statements. On the album’s closing track, “The King,” Kanye raps about the backlash and doubles down on his previous stances, further fueling the debates about his public persona.
What’s Next for Kanye?
As always, Kanye’s music stirs up mixed reactions. While some fans praise his boldness and creativity, others are raising eyebrows at the inclusion of such polarizing figures. But this is nothing new for Kanye—he’s always been someone who pushes the boundaries of what’s acceptable in mainstream music.
So, what are your thoughts on Kanye West mentioning the likes of Diddy, R Kelly, Bill Cosby, and Taylor Swift on Vultures Vol. 1? Is it artistic expression, or is he playing with fire once again?
